In stage II mesothelioma, the disease may have spread to the lungs or diaphragm.

Stage III mesothelioma is when the cancer may have spread to other areas of the chest.

And finally, stage IV mesothelioma is when the disease may have spread to farther areas of the body such as the brain.

There is a range of treatments for malignant mesothelioma which include surgery to decrease fluid or remove affected tissue. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can also be used.

Asbestos-related diseases such as malignant mesothelioma are typically very deadly, as the World Health Organization estimates that such illnesses claim the lives of 107,000 people each year.

Australian asbestos compensation fund at risk of drying up

An asbestos compensation fund set up by a building materials company for asbestos victims in Australia is reportedly in danger of running out of money.

James Hardie - the company that set up the fund in 2006 - said that it expects the government of the state of New South Wales to contribute to the fund before it runs out, according to the Australian Associated Press.

The fund was established to provide asbestos compensation to those who have been afflicted by illnesses caused by exposure to the naturally occurring substance, such as malignant mesothelioma, asbestosis and lung cancer. James Hardie had paid into the fund each year through its free cash flow.

"The fund is, I understand, in discussions with the NSW government about a likely drawdown under the facility that was established by the NSW government with assistance with the Commonwealth," James Hardie chief financial officer Russell Chenu told the news source.

The arraignment between the company and the government was reportedly made last December.

In the second quarter of 2011, the fund paid about $25.1 million in asbestos compensation to victims, reports the news provider.

Doctors weigh uncertainty of finding, treating mesothelioma early

Very few cases of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) are found in their initial stages, to the point that the American Cancer Society (ACS) suggests the extreme unlikelihood of early diagnosis. However, a team of researchers recently examined the idea of discovering and treating MPM before it spreads throughout the chest cavity.

The results appeared in the International Journal of Clinical Oncology. In brief, scientists found that it is difficult to detect the earliest stage of mesothelioma, so much so that it is largely happened upon by accident. However, once found, localized MPM might be surgically removed using a parietal pleurectomy (PP), they argued.

In its earliest stage, known as T0, mesothelioma has not yet formed a visible tumor or even begun causing noticeable symptoms, the ACS states. The authors noted that in these cases, a cellular examination of the pleural fluid is very imprecise - often yielding a 40 percent false-negative rate.

However, this is the stage in which MPM would be theoretically at its most treatable. To this end, the team described using PP among a select group of patients whose pleural fluid examinations were ambiguous and whose lung health was "characterized with strong clinical suspicion."

The results were mixed, particularly since uncertain pleural health hardly makes an airtight case for or against a radical treatment. Still, more work remains to be done to see if it is ever warranted to perform, as they put it, a "highly invasive diagnostic surgery for pathologically unproven disease."
